A City's Spring

Dusk clouds pressed low upon the walls; ten thousand alleys lay vacant. One person led the old and carried the young; hundreds fled with bundles on their backs. Inside and outside the gates, only broken walls were left behind. Halfway gone, they looked back, seeing tilted cages hung askew, cold stoves, and ruined eaves. The city's spring died there, scattered entirely into the wind.
